Cobalt Connects, Concept & Project Management
Concept
Cobalt Connects is heavily involved in public art at the regional level. The James North Plaza project will have an incredible impact on how this significant development is perceived by the community and visitors alike.
With this sense of impact in mind, we wanted to ensure an Indigenous work was considered by the jury. Unfortunately Indigenous artists are often overlooked, or simply don’t have access to the same career development supports as other artists.
To ensure this process would not follow the same path we approached Angela DeMontigny to consider a collaboration.
Team Building
Thrilled with the reception we got from Angela about creating a piece we presented the concept of taking the amazing bead designs from her fashion, and bringing it to life at a grand scale.
While this was Angela’s first public art adventure, she adapted quickly and created 5 incredible designs. From here we explored fabrication processes - with a great interest in something sustainable and filled with light.
Cobalt recruited local glass artist Paull Rodrigue, and expert steel fabricator La Fontaine Iron Werks to join the team.
Management
Throughout the call and shortlist process Cobalt’s team managed the development of the concept, gathering team information, and submitting all correspondence with the City of Hamilton.
We’re honoured to have been selected by the jury, and look forward to creating a work for Hamilton to be proud of.
Over the next year Cobalt Connects will be managing the collaborators, documenting the process and assisting in creating opportunities for the public to engage with the process.
Stay tuned for workshops with our project partners and check out the Calls for Engagement page for opportunities to engage.
